This week, Korean Billy revealed his second video , in which explains the meaning behind phrases like "Gotta go an see ar kid in the ozzy". Another video he produced , in which he teaches people how to pronounce certain words with a Liverpool accent, racked up more than 100,000 views. We caught up with the 25-year-old vlogger from Seoul, who's real name is Seong-Jae Kong, to find out more. Have you ever been to Liverpool? Yes I’ve visited a few times. In 2015 I lived in Preston for about six months and went to University of Central Lancashire for one semester as an exchange student. Since Preston is quite close to Liverpool and Manchester, I travelled to Liverpool a few times last year. What did you think of the city? I really liked my trips in Liverpool. My hometown is the port city called Busan, and I really love travelling to other port cities. I loved Albert Dock, Museum of Liverpool, and I also went up the Radio City Tower. People from my hometown, Busan also use Busan dialect which is quite popular in Korea, so I’m quite interested in other dialects, especially in other languages. While going to UCLAN as an exchange student I met a lot of classmates from Liverpool and found their scouse accent fascinating. That’s how I got really interested in the Scouse dialect and they taught me how to speak scouse. What is your favourite scouse word? The first scouse word I learnt was “brekkie”, so I like this word. I heard the word “la” a lot from people in Liverpool. I think this “la” thing makes scousers sound more friendly. Also, it’s not a “scouse” word, but I like the word “chicken” with the scouse “k” sound. It’s so interesting. Why did you decide to start doing dialect videos? When I first heard the Scouse dialect, I found it really interesting because I didn’t know anything about British dialects. After I came back from the UK and started to make Youtube videos, the scouse dialect just popped up in my mind while thinking of new topics to cover. Besides British dialects, I’ve also made videos about Korean dialects. Are you surprised how much people enjoy them? I was so surprised to see people enjoying my videos. I could never imagine they would go viral and that so many people would watch them. I could see some comments by scousers saying they really like my scouse accent and I’m so happy to get their approval. Do you have any plans to return to Liverpool? I really want to visit Liverpool but I don’t have any specific plans yet, but I will definitely be back. Apart from making dialect videos, what else do you do? I’ve recently graduated from university in Korea last February, so I’m just working as a freelancer. I usually do media jobs such as voice-overs or translation work and also spend most of my time making Youtube videos. I hope to eventually work as a broadcast journalist or a multimedia journalist in the UK. What's next for you? There are still a lot of British dialects and languages for me to explore. I’m hoping to make videos about the Glaswegian dialect and Welsh in the future since they also sound distinctive to me. Also, since my Youtube channel covers various topics including British culture and Korean culture, I will make more videos about those topics as well.
